The Rise and Fall of the Taconic Mountains: A Geological History of Eastern New York by Donald W. Fisher and Stephen L. Nightingale

Looking for a straightforward introduction to the geology of eastern New York? The Rise and Fall of the Taconic Mountains does a decent job in this regard. It’s written for the layperson so even someone without much geology background can follow along and have an understanding of the geologic forces that have shaped eastern New York.

The book includes plenty of photographs, drawings and tables that help to explain and illustrate the concepts presented in the text. The book also includes a color insert that includes a geologic map of the region along with geologic cross-sections of the region to give you an idea of what is beneath the ground.

The eastern New York ‘region’ covered in this book includes Columbia county and portions of Ulster and Green counties. The majority of the book focuses on Columbia county, as that is where the Taconic Mountains are.
