Review of National Geographic Trails Illustrated Catskill Park Map

National Geographic has recently released a new map for the Catskill Park in their Trails Illustrated map set.  This map covers most of the Catskill Region with information on hiking, fishing and other outdoor recreational activities.  The scale is pretty small so some details are lost in order to provide coverage of the entire park.  The map itself is made from waterproof, tear-resistant material and seems to hold up to regular use without much problem.

Based on my prior experience with the Trails Illustrated maps, I expected a map of the Catskills that provided a good overview of the park, but that might be lacking some details.  That is what I have found with this map.  It is a great map for trip planning and road travel, but for trail travel, the scale is just too small and the map too big to make it much of a map that you would take hiking with you.

Vermont Atlas and Gazetteer by DeLorme

Once you get off the major roadways and interstates in Vermont, the state has an awful lot of little roads. That’s where the Vermont Atlas and Gazetteer from DeLorme comes in handy. It’s a detailed guide to the entire state, showing you detail from the largest interstate to the smallest dirt road making its way across the backcountry.

Not only that, but the Gazetteer is full of information about Vermont and it’s all cross-referenced to the maps in the Atlas.

This is one handy guide to have if you do any exploring in Vermont. You’ll have a handy map set so you never get lost and you’ll have an extensive reference to all the various features Vermont has to offer.

New Hampshire Atlas and Gazetteer from DeLorme

It may seem silly to have several different atlases for the New England states, but it isn’t, especially if you have the individual state atlases and gazetteers from DeLorme. That’s the case with the New Hampshire Atlas and Gazetteer. You’ll get more information than you know what to do with and some of the best maps of the entire state.

For anyone driving or exploring in New Hampshire, this Atlas and Gazetteer is well worth the price. You’ll get a ton of information in the gazetteer and some great maps in the atlas.

Maine Atlas & Gazetteer from DeLorme

When I worked in Maine, the Maine Atlas & Gazetteer was literally my bible whenever I traveled. That’s because a big part of my job back then was to visit various sites that were located in the unorganized Townships and Plantations that exist throughout Maine and I would have to travel on the roads that were maintained by the paper companies.

What’s the best way to navigate all these roads that you won’t find on your typical Maine highway map?

Get the Maine Atlas & Gazetteer. It provides the most comprehensive coverage for all of Maine and all of its roadways, whether they are public or private.

Seriously, I’d probably still be lost somewhere in northern Maine if I hadn’t had one of these in my truck when I was visiting sites.

National Geographic Trails Illustrated Acadia National Park Map

Like I do with almost any National Park before I visit, I made sure I got myself a copy of the National Geographic’s Trails Illustrated map for Acadia National Park when I knew I would be spending some time there exploring the park.

Like all of the maps in the Trails Illustrated series, this map for Acadia National Park is well worth what you’ll pay for it. The map is printed on a tear-proof and waterproof plastic material which extends that life and versatility of the map tremendously. You don’t have to worry about folding it up and putting it in your pocket or throwing it in your backpack. When you pull it out, it might be a bit wrinkled, but it will not have faded, torn or worn out.

Delorme's Baxter State Park Map

If you are going to Baxter State Park in Maine, you really need to get yourself a good map of the area, especially if you are planning on visiting the less popular areas of the park or if you are planning on going off-trail anywhere in the park.

You have a couple of options when it comes to the maps, including the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Baxter map that is included with their guidebook for Maine, along with this map from Delorme. The guidebook map is just a map without any trail descriptions or park information – for that, you’ll need to bring the guidebook with you. The Delorme map on the other hand includes not only a detailed map showing topography, trails and points of interest, but it also includes basic park information and a abbreviated guide to the trails in the park.

Looking for a quality map that will give you a good overview of the trail network and recreational opportunities in Zion National Park? If you are, you should get your hands on a copy of the National Geographic Trails Illustrated Zion National Park map. It gives you a good overview of the park, its trails and any other recreational and backcountry destinations.

The Zion National Park map from the National Geographic Trails Illustrated series offers a two-sided map of the park at a 1:37700 scale (1 inch equals 0.6 miles). The map itself offers plenty of detail on the park and its trails. It’s useful both as a planning tool before you get to the park and also as a map to carry in your backpack with you, to make sure you are staying on track.

National Geographic Trails Illustrated Grand Canyon National Park Map

Grand Canyon National Park is grand in many ways, including its size and the amount of hiking and backcountry recreation available. What’s the best way to get a feel for the entire park and understand what’s available? The Grand Canyon Trails Illustrated Map from National Geographic are, at least in my mind.

This map shows you the entire park, has enlargements of various important sites throughout the park, includes all trails and also includes a detailed look at the backcountry of the park, which makes it a lot easier to plan a hiking trip – whether it’s only a day hike or a multi-day trek through the Canyon.

National Geographic Trails Illustrated Death Valley National Park Map

When I think of National Geographic, the first thing (besides really nice pictures) is the maps that they always include in their magazines. National Geographic maps are always well made, nice to look at and generally easy to interpret. With their National Park series of maps, things are no different.

Printed on a waterproof and tear proof material, these maps are made to be thrown into your backpack and brought into the great outdoors with you. The Death Valley National Park map has a 1:160000 scale, which gives you a good look at the parks details without making the map too large.
